Caledonia is one of the very few British kitchen manufacturers still building every cabinet by hand, in a single factory on the north coast of Scotland rather than on a mass production line. As West Yorkshire's only Caledonia displaying retailer, Arlington Interiors brings that handcrafted approach to homeowners across Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area. From genuine in-frame cabinetry and hand-painted finishes to real wood veneer interiors and bespoke storage, every Caledonia kitchen we design is built around your home, not selected from a catalogue.

British Kitchen Craftsmanship, Hand-Built Since 1986

Every Caledonia kitchen is still made at the family's factory in Wick, Caithness, in the far north of Scotland, not far from John o' Groats. It is one of the few remaining kitchen manufacturers in the UK to combine that scale of production with genuinely hand-built cabinetry, rather than outsourcing to mass-production lines.
In practice, that heritage shows up in details many homeowners never think to check until they live with a kitchen built properly the first time: cabinets built to order rather than pulled from a standard run, dovetailed drawer boxes rather than glued or stapled joints, and a choice of true in-frame construction alongside the more familiar shaker lay-on door.

What Makes a Caledonia Kitchen Different

  • In-Frame Construction: a solid timber frame is fixed to the front of each cabinet, with the door set within that frame rather than laid over it, giving the kitchen a furniture-like, architectural quality that develops with age rather than dating.
  • Hand-Painted, Made-to-Order Finishes: every kitchen is painted individually rather than pulled from a pre-finished batch, from a palette of 47 in-vogue colours and tints, with a colour-match service if you already have a shade in mind.
  • Real Wood Veneer Interiors: cabinet interiors are available in genuine walnut or oak veneer, matched to dovetailed drawer boxes, a level of detail that reflects the care and craftsmanship behind every kitchen.
  • 40 Cabinet Colours Behind the Door: the inside of every cabinet can be finished in one of 40 colours to complement or deliberately contrast the external door, so the kitchen looks considered with every door open.
  • Bespoke Storage, Built Around How You Live: from pull-out pantry larders and dovetailed cutlery drawers to hidden coffee stations, wine storage and corner solutions, storage is designed around your kitchen rather than fitted from a standard module.
  • A 10-Year Guarantee: cabinets, drawers, hinges, doors and worktops are covered for a decade, a tangible reassurance giving added confidence in the quality of the product.

Ash Painted or Smooth Painted: A Detail Worth Understanding

Look closely at Caledonia's range names and you will often see a kitchen described as Ash Painted or Smooth Painted, a distinction that is genuinely useful to understand before you choose a finish. An Ash Painted door is painted over a real ash timber base, so the natural grain of the wood remains faintly visible through the paint, giving a softer, more tactile, traditionally crafted feel. A Smooth Painted door uses a grain-free base, giving a flatter, more contemporary painted surface with no visible timber texture. Neither is better than the other, it is a question of the character you want in the room: Ash Painted suits a period property or a softer, more rustic shaker look, while Smooth Painted suits a cleaner, more modern painted kitchen.

Caledonia Kitchen Styles: Classic, In-Frame, Handle-less and Bespoke

Caledonia offers a collection of beautifully handcrafted kitchens to suit both traditional and contemporary homes. Whether you're drawn to the timeless appeal of a painted shaker kitchen, the craftsmanship of a true in-frame design or the clean lines of a handleless kitchen, every range is built to order using the same commitment to quality and attention to detail.

Alongside kitchens, Caledonia also creates matching utility rooms and boot rooms, making it easy to achieve a cohesive look throughout your home.

Door styles range from classic shaker and raised-panel designs to more contemporary flat-panel options, all available in a choice of painted finishes, real wood veneers or a bespoke colour matched to your own scheme.

Why Arlington Chose Caledonia

We carefully curate the kitchen manufacturers displayed in our showroom so we can offer clients a choice of outstanding British and German kitchens to suit different styles, homes and lifestyles. Caledonia joined our portfolio in 2024, and we unveiled a bespoke in-frame shaker display during our 20th Anniversary Weekend. We chose Caledonia because it complements our collection beautifully, offering clients handcrafted British cabinetry, authentic in-frame construction, hand-painted finishes and the reassurance of a 10-year guarantee. We remain Caledonia's only displaying retailer in West Yorkshire, and it reflects the level of craftsmanship, flexibility and design quality we look for when selecting brands for our showroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are Caledonia kitchens made?

Caledonia kitchens are hand-built at Ashley Ann's factory in Wick, Caithness, in the far north of Scotland. The company has been making kitchen and bedroom furniture there since 1986.

What is the difference between an in-frame and a shaker kitchen?

Shaker describes the door style: a five-piece door with a recessed centre panel, laid on top of the cabinet. In-frame describes the construction: a timber frame is built onto the cabinet itself, and the door sits within it. A kitchen can be both in-frame and shaker at once, they are not alternatives to each other, they describe two different things.

Are Caledonia kitchens made to measure?

Yes. Every Caledonia kitchen is built to order rather than pulled from a standard range, hand-painted individually and sized to the exact dimensions of your room, with storage designed around your own layout and lifestyle.

Can I choose my own kitchen colour?

Yes. Caledonia kitchens can be finished in any of 47 standard paint and tint colours, or colour-matched to a shade of your own choosing, so your kitchen is never limited to what is shown in a brochure.

Do Caledonia kitchens come with a guarantee?

Yes. Caledonia's cabinets, drawers, hinges, doors and worktops are covered by a 10-year guarantee, subject to normal wear and tear and excluding accidental damage.

How much does a Caledonia kitchen cost?

Because every Caledonia kitchen is built to order, cost depends on the size of your room, the door range and finish you choose, and the level of bespoke storage and appliances involved. As a hand-built, in-frame capable British kitchen, Caledonia sits at the premium end of the market rather than the volume end. The most accurate way to understand cost for your own project is a design consultation with our team, where we can talk through your space and priorities before pricing anything.

Can I see Caledonia kitchens in Leeds?
Yes. Our showroom at Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley displays a bespoke in-frame shaker Caledonia design alongside our full range of British and German kitchens. We are Caledonia's only displaying retailer in West Yorkshire.
